A Gentle Guide to Seasonal Living: Spring at Home
Apr 08, 2025
At Indaba, we don’t believe in following trends—but we do believe in taking cues from the seasons. After all, no one does it better than Mother Nature—the ultimate creator and guide for “What’s In This Spring.”
As I write this, the windows are open, even though it’s still a bit chilly (that’s what a throw is for). My favourite bird is back, and the tide is coming in. The hope of spring is in the air.
With the windows open and the days growing longer, there’s a natural urge to clear out and revive our space—to freshen up and tend to the corners of our home that have been inward and quiet for the past six months. Like a bear emerging from hibernation, our world begins to open up again.
Taking inspiration from the seasons helps create a home that’s in tune with the natural rhythms of the earth—and with our own circadian rhythms. A home that feels good to be in is really all about energy. Through styling, texture, and colour, we can shape the kind of energy we want to live in.
Have you heard of colour analysis? The idea is that our natural features—the colour of our eyes, skin, and hair, and the contrast between them—align with one of the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter.
Each season holds its own palette—not just in name, but in tone. The same hues can appear across seasons, but their tint, tone, and shade shift. Think of how grass looks in spring versus late summer or autumn—it’s the same patch of grass, but the feeling is completely different.
That’s the magic we can create in your home—the same space, infused with a whole new energy.
Spring is the most vibrant of the seasons. Think daffodils bursting through the soil, lush greenery after the rains, and crystal-clear water before the summer heat sets off the algae bloom. Bright, unexpected pops of colour are a welcome sign of life—a reminder of the beauty of being alive.
These small touches create a sense of aliveness—a nod to the season without needing a full overhaul. Think of a colourful tablecloth or runner draped over your dining table, a cheerful lavender eye pillow, or a playful patterned tea towel in the kitchen. It’s all about weaving joy and freshness into your space—little hints of spring that make you smile.
When we follow the cues of nature, we begin to notice the subtleties. The way the light shifts ever so slightly at golden hour. The scent of the earth after rain. The moment you slip off your socks and step barefoot onto warm floors for the first time in months. Spring invites us to wake up—not with urgency, but with gentleness. Like petals slowly opening, one at a time.
This same energy can be felt in our homes. It doesn’t take much—a few thoughtful changes can transform a space. Rearranging furniture to invite in more light. Swapping out darker tones for something a little lighter, a little brighter. Adding a fresh bouquet from the market, or better yet, snipping something wild from the yard or roadside and letting it live in a simple vessel.
It’s less about making everything new, and more about letting things feel renewed.
At Indaba, our approach to seasonal living is rooted in this kind of intention. We believe in beauty with meaning—pieces that are not only lovely to look at, but that also tell a story, support traditional craftsmanship, and connect us to something deeper.
That’s why we work so closely with artisans around the world—people who understand what it means to work with the seasons. Who dye fabrics under the sun. Who print by hand. Who shape vessels from earth and water. Their work holds the energy of the environment it was made in, and we feel that in the final piece.
Spring is also a season of creativity. Of ideas budding and new visions taking root. It’s a beautiful time to experiment with your space, to ask: What kind of energy do I want to feel here? What colours reflect how I want to feel when I wake up, or sit down to dinner, or welcome someone in?
Maybe it’s soft yellow, like the morning sun. Or pale green, like new leaves. Or blush pink, like the first tulip to bloom. It could even be a bold cobalt or a fresh pop of apricot—something unexpected that brings a burst of joy.
There’s no right answer—only what feels good to you. That’s the beauty of seasonal living: it’s a conversation with the present moment. An invitation to look around, breathe deeply, and respond with care.
So as the birds return and the light shifts, we hope you feel inspired to open your windows, move things around, and make a little space for something new. Let spring stir your creativity, soften your edges, and remind you how good it feels to come back to life.
