How to Choose a Tote Bag: Jute, Canvas and Quilted Styles

The tote bag that gets used is the one that's already hanging by the door. It holds the market haul, the library books and the cardigan you might need later, and it doesn't ask for much in return. Choosing one is mostly a matter of knowing what you'll carry and how you like it to look when it's slightly rumpled and well used.

Here's how we think about picking a tote bag, from the weave of a jute market tote to the quilting on a weekend carryall, with a few of our own favourites along the way.

What will you carry? Start there

Before material or colour, think about the day the bag is for. A tote that's lovely on a Saturday market run can feel too floppy for a work commute, and a structured bag can feel like a lot for a quick errand.

  • Market days and groceries: look for sturdy straps and an open top that's easy to load. Unlined natural fibres and canvas both work well here.
  • Everyday errands and books: an interior pocket keeps your keys and phone from sinking to the bottom, and a lining makes the bag easier to wipe out.
  • Weekends and travel: a softly quilted tote holds its shape without weighing much, and it tucks under a seat or over a shoulder with ease.
  • Laundry and storage: a tall, wide-mouthed tote can do double duty as a laundry carrier or a spot to corral throws and pillows.

Jute tote bags: natural texture, relaxed shape

Jute is a natural fibre with a dry, slightly rustic hand, and it ages nicely. A woven jute tote bag brings warmth to a mostly linen-and-cotton wardrobe, and it looks right next to a basket on an entry shelf.

Our Bella Woven Jute Tote in Sunset is handwoven in three tonal bands of earthy colour, with soft leather shoulder straps. It's unlined and lightweight, so it's a good carryall for a market morning or a day by the water. The Bella Woven Jute Tote in Sunrise is the same shape in a different palette, if you'd rather have something a little lighter.

A few things to know about woven jute totes:

  • Unlined means the weave is visible, so small items can slip through if the gaps are wide. Tuck keys and loose bits into a pouch.
  • Jute doesn't love water. Keep it away from rain and wet produce, and spot clean only (this is the care our Bella totes call for).
  • The colour banding and slight irregularities in a handwoven bag are part of its character, not flaws.

Canvas and cotton totes: easy, roomy and a little playful

If you search for a canvas tote bag, you'll see an enormous range, from plain to loudly printed. What separates a good one is the detail: edging that's been properly finished, straps that are stitched to last, and a lining that makes the inside as nice as the outside.

The Birdsong Tote Bag is a roomy cotton market tote with an illustrated bird print, woven tape edging and sturdy canvas straps. Inside there's a pocket and a hand block printed lining in a contrasting pattern, which is the kind of small surprise we like finding when we reach in for our keys.

For something in a softer, more graphic mood, the Spring Silhouettes Tote Bag in Multi has an abstract design inspired by cut-paper shapes and organic forms, in a fresh palette. If you prefer a calmer colourway, the Spring Silhouettes Tote Bag in Green is the quieter sibling. Both share the same woven tape edging, canvas straps and hand block printed lining.

Both the Birdsong and Spring Silhouettes totes are spot clean only, so think of them as everyday bags rather than ones to toss in with the towels.

Block print totes: pattern with a human touch

A block print tote bag carries the mark of the process. Each pattern is stamped by hand using carved wooden blocks, so you'll see small shifts in alignment and ink density from one bag to the next. That variation is the point.

The Taiga Block Print Tote in Ochre is printed using the traditional Dabu technique with natural dyes, with a different pattern on the inside than on the outside. It has an interior pocket for the small stuff and is the one we'd reach for if we wanted a bag that feels a little more crafted than a plain canvas tote. Because the dyes are natural, wash it separately, skip the bleach, and don't tumble dry or iron it.

Quilted tote bags: soft structure for weekends away

A quilted tote bag has a gently padded, structured feel without any stiffness. The quilting keeps the sides from slumping, which makes a real difference when the bag is half full.

The Tropicana Quilted Tote Bag is cotton with a digitally printed pomegranate motif inspired by classic block prints, and a striped cotton lining that carries onto the handles. There's an interior pocket, and it's roomy enough for market days, a weekend trip or a picnic. Unlike the spot-clean-only totes above, this one can go in the machine on a gentle cycle. Hang it to dry and keep the bleach in the cupboard.

How to pick the right size

Large tote bags are tempting because they promise room for everything, but a bag that's too big becomes a place where things go to get lost. A few simple checks help:

  • Hold it open: a good everyday tote should let you see what's at the bottom without digging.
  • Think about the strap drop: shoulder straps are comfortable for heavier loads, while shorter handles suit a lighter bag you carry in your hand or on your forearm.
  • Match the bag to the load: books and groceries are heavy, so choose canvas or a quilted cotton. A lighter jute tote suits a couple of loaves and a bunch of flowers.
  • Check the dimensions on the product page before you buy, and compare them to a bag you already love.

Totes that aren't for carrying out the door

Some of our favourite totes never leave the house. The Jute Tall Laundry Tote in Bleached is handwoven from natural jute with a tall silhouette and generous capacity, and it makes a good-looking stand-in for a laundry hamper. If you prefer something darker, the Jute Tall Laundry Tote in Black has the same shape in a deeper tone. Both are spot clean only.

They're also useful for throws, extra pillows or a pile of winter hats by the front door. If you're after other woven pieces for the house, our Baskets & Bags collection is a good place to browse.

Caring for your tote bag

  • Jute: spot clean only, and keep it dry. Let it air out rather than storing it damp.
  • Printed cotton totes with a block print lining: spot clean only, as our Birdsong and Spring Silhouettes totes call for.
  • Taiga block print tote: machine wash separately, no bleach, no tumble dry, no iron.
  • Tropicana quilted tote: machine wash gentle, hang dry, no bleach.

Always check the care label on the bag you own, since fibres and finishes differ.

Tote bag questions we hear often

What's the difference between a jute tote and a canvas tote?

Jute is a natural plant fibre with a rustic, open texture, usually unlined and lighter in feel. Canvas is a tightly woven cotton that's smoother, sturdier and easier to print, often with a lining and pocket.

Can I wash a jute tote bag?

Our jute totes, including the Bella totes and the laundry totes, are spot clean only. Don't soak or machine wash them.

Is a quilted tote bag good for everyday use?

Yes. The quilting gives the bag a little structure, so it stands up better when it's partly filled. It's a good fit for weekends, travel and picnics as well as errands.

How do I stop small items falling through a woven tote?

Use a pouch or a small zip bag for keys, cards and loose items. It also makes it easier to move them between bags.

What's a good tote bag to give as a gift?

A cheerful printed tote is an easy gift for a friend, a host or a neighbour. Our Gifts for Her collection includes tote bags alongside other keepsake pieces, and our housewarming gift guide has more ideas for a new home.

A bag that gets better with use

The best tote bag is the one you stop thinking about, because it's always there when you need it. Pick the material that suits the way you live, give it a pocket if you can, and let it soften and wear in. If you're not sure where to begin, the Birdsong, Bella and Taiga totes are a happy place to start.
